Miss Drag South Africa, the country’s premier national drag pageant, is officially accepting entries for its highly anticipated 2025 edition.

According to organisers, the contest is not just about glitz and glamour—it’s a platform for community-driven transformation.

“Drag with a purpose” is the ethos that drives the event, making it a catalyst for positive change within the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond.

“Miss Drag South Africa has evolved beyond traditional beauty pageants, becoming a platform that challenges and dismantles conventional notions of beauty,” says Enigma von Hamburg, the event’s Pageant Director.

In recent years, South Africa’s drag scene has flourished, reaching new heights. Last year it was announced that Africa’s queens will finally have their moment in the international spotlight with the upcoming first-ever Drag Race South Africa.

Who Can Enter?

Miss Drag South Africa is open to anyone assigned male at birth who identifies as non-binary, gay, and/or transgender and has a passion for the art of drag.

Organisers especially encourage participants who are actively involved in community work, projects, or organisations to enter.

“The ideal Miss Drag South Africa is a passionate advocate for social change, dedicated to promoting inclusion, solidarity, and queer liberation,” adds von Hamburg.

A Historic 2024 Winner

The 2024 edition made history when, for the first time, a transgender woman took the crown.

Anastasia K. Boney, a constable in the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape, was crowned in May 2024. She walked away with a prize package valued at R110,000, including R20,000 in cash.

The 2025 pageant is set to take place in December in the Western Cape.
