The Feather Awards and the Thami Dish Foundation have officially unveiled their first-ever “ambassador”—and no, it’s not another celebrity, but someone (or rather, something) far more fabulous!

Meet Thando, a non-binary trailblazer who just so happens to be a mascot. Thando was introduced to the world on 11 October, celebrated as Coming Out Day.

According to the Foundation, which hosts the annual awards, Thando—whose name fittingly means ‘love’ in Zulu—embodies the spirit of inclusivity and celebrates the vibrant diversity of the LGBTIQ+ community.

“As a non-binary individual, Thando will serve as a powerful spokesperson for the awards this year, bringing a unique voice and perspective to the annual celebration. Their passion for fostering love and acceptance aligns perfectly with the values of the Feather Awards,” said the Foundation in a statement.

As the official mascot for the awards, Thando—who uses the pronouns ‘they/them’—will be gracing everything from red carpets to Pride events, all while promoting the importance of representation in the arts and culture. Expect selfies. Lots and lots of selfies.

Thami Kotlolo, co-founder of the Feather Awards, told MambaOnline that Thando will “be everywhere” in the coming weeks, attending numerous LGBTIQ+ events during South Africa’s Pride Month.

“We are proud to welcome Thando as our first-ever ambassador from the Thami Dish Foundation,” said Kotlolo. “Their presence at the Feather Awards not only reflects our mission of inclusivity but also inspires others to embrace their true selves. We believe Thando will resonate with many in the community and beyond.”

Thando said they are “incredibly honoured to be a part of the Feather Awards.” They added: “This platform allows me to celebrate love in all its forms and to encourage others to embrace their identities without fear. Together, we can create a world where everyone is free to be themselves.”

The Feather Awards recognise outstanding contributions to the LGBTQ+ community and promote acceptance, love, and unity. The nominees for the 2024 awards were recently announced in Johannesburg.

Thando will, of course, be in attendance at the Feather Awards ceremony on Thursday, 7th November, where this year’s winners will be revealed, but let’s face it, Thando already won everything.
