Iconic British queer star Sir Ian McKellen has urged theatre-goers to experience the remarkable stage celebration of Simon Nkoli’s life that’s set to wow Cape Town in October.

Described as a groundbreaking fusion of history, music, dance, and queer culture, Nkoli: The Vogue Opera will take centre stage at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from 9 to 19 October. This follows the show’s successful run at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg last year.

Part opera, part vogue ball, it is a celebration of the life of the late Simon Nkoli, one of South Africa’s most influential queer, anti-apartheid, and HIV freedom fighters, whose actions left a lasting impact on the nation.

Nkoli: The Vogue Opera is created and composed by internationally renowned composer Philip Miller, with lyrics co-written by rapper S’bo Gyre. It is directed by award-winning directors Rikki Beadle-Blair and John Trengove (The Wound).

The show features video projections by acclaimed filmmaker Catherine Meyburgh and choreography by the internationally celebrated dancer Llewellyn Mnguni.

“Imagine if Hamilton and RuPaul’s Drag Race had a baby in South Africa. That’s Nkoli: The Vogue Opera!” explains S’bo Gyre.

In a video, McKellen — the legendary stage and screen star, best known for his roles as Magneto and Gandalf — expressed his enthusiasm for the show.

“Simon Nkoli was a great South African, crucial in the struggle for freedom. And he deserves to be celebrated. And now he has a vogue opera in his honour, Nkoli, at the Baxter Theatre. Do go, you’ll have a wonderful time!” said the actor, who personally knew Nkoli.

Nkoli was imprisoned during the Delmas Treason Trial (1985–1988), and after his release, he organised Africa’s first Pride march in Johannesburg in 1990. He played a key role in ensuring that gay rights were enshrined in South Africa’s constitution. Simon died in 1998 at the age of 41 from AIDS-related illnesses, at a time when antiretroviral drugs were denied in South Africa.

The opera is set within a vogue ballroom competition and follows Simon’s journey from his childhood in Sebokeng township to his rise as a leader in the fight against apartheid and for LGBTQ+ rights.

It is a story of courage, determination, unity, and love, set against one of the most tumultuous periods in South African history. The story is told through protest songs, lush arias, lip-syncing, rap, huge choruses, and remarkable video projections.

Simbone Qonya stars as Simon Nkoli

The Cape Town run of Nkoli: The Vogue Opera promises to captivate audiences with visually striking sets, opulent costumes, and a cast of extraordinary performers, including newcomer Simbone Qonya as Simon Nkoli, renowned singer Ann Masina as Nkoli’s mother, and the talented rapping emcee, Niza Jay.

Through its dynamic storytelling and emotional resonance, the vogue opera celebrates Simon Nkoli’s life and legacy. It stands as a powerful call for justice and equality, particularly for South Africa’s LGBTQ+ community. Catch it before it starts its international tour!
