I first met Kevin in a professional capacity during the 2018 Mr Gay World event hosted in Knysna. My agency oversaw the event’s digital campaigns, and Kevin represented one of the country’s largest LGBTQ+ magazines.

A regular on the club scene, with boyishly good looks, and a lot of artistic talent, made him a popular addition to the South African gay scene.

I recently logged on to X to find that Kevin has since turned the camera on himself for a series of posts where he bares it all online.

The Spark Behind the Spotlight

It would be dishonest of me not to share the moment of revelation when I stumbled upon Kevin’s risqué content on X. What started as a suggestive thirst trap in an outdoor shower soon became an online sensation, drawing attention for its auto-erotic portrayal of nudity and uninhibited expression, which left me a little shocked but mostly intrigued.

And so, I sat down with Kevin Kat to ask him about the inspiration behind this captivating journey. Here’s what he had to say:

Let’s start with the most obvious. Why? Lots of people would see your content on X and wonder what made you decide to share that side of yourself in such a public forum.

Kevin: “I’ve always been a bit of an exhibitionist since coming out of the closet after years of suppression and shame. When I finally had the nerve to be me, I think the thirst-trapping, sexually open, unashamed version of Kevin Kat just bloomed. In a way, I think it was a response to not feeling like girls were ever attracted to me that much when I was in the closet while also suppressing what I was after… So I guess it is that classical Velvet Rage scenario where my sexual awakening was delayed to my late twenties. It’s been 10 years now and I still enjoy being free and open with my sexuality and physicality. I also feel like people put so much shame on sex and it’s so unnecessary. We all like to do it, we should be more open to sharing it without feeling shame. I see it like this, we all watch porn at one point or another and most of us enjoy watching porn. But the moment it’s somebody you know putting out explicit content, it becomes taboo. On the one hand, it’s acceptable to make or consume porn as long as it feels far and removed from you. Then on the other hand when somebody you know does it they are labelled a slut or worse. Are the people you watch on Pornhub not every bit as complex and human as your neighbour? If so, it should be okay for anyone to do it without being judged.”

Kevin’s candid response illuminates his journey to self-acceptance and his mission to challenge societal taboos surrounding sexuality and self-expression. It’s a reminder that embracing one’s true self is a powerful form of liberation.

Love, Respect, and Openness

If you are currently in a relationship how does your content affect your relationship?

Kevin: “I am in a very happy open relationship of over a year, and we just moved in together. I would marry him tomorrow if I could. It hasn’t affected our relationship. I think I learned to accept and love myself for who I am, and during that journey, I had relationships and experiences that taught me who I wanted to be in a relationship, rather than what I wanted the other person to be. So my approach is brutal and total honesty from the get-go about the fact that I am not a monogamous person, I have tried and it just wasn’t for me. When I enter a new relationship I present myself as I am, and it is a take-it-or-leave-it situation. That’s how my current relationship started and we have navigated through ups and downs, but what we have works for us.”

Would you want your current or future partner to join you on your OnlyFans channel?

Kevin: “I would welcome that kind of participation because it makes my life easier logistically. But it doesn’t matter really.”

Unveiling Financial Horizons

Is there any financial benefit to having an adult OnlyFans profile? (In other words, are you making money, and is it enough to make a living from it.)

Kevin: “There’s great financial reward. The only reason I started my channel was because I wanted to furnish our new apartment. But I think the key thing to understand here is that it is a job. The more work you put in, the more you will reap. Currently, I am more focused on my day job which is doing graphic design, so it is more of a hobby and time-to-time side hustle.”

Talking about your day job. We first met in a semi-professional setup. I know you to be an exceptionally creative individual. Do you fear that your online persona might affect future job opportunities?

Kevin: “I don’t live my life in fear of what-ifs. Anyone who knows me can tell you I’m a Yes-person and that I live in the now, for me, in my own way. I see no reason it should affect my professional life. If it did ever come up as a reason for me not being chosen for an opportunity, I know that opportunity wasn’t for me anyway.”

Embracing Online Fame with a Dash of Humour

Have you been recognised in public since starting your OnlyFans account, and what were those encounters like?

Kevin: “LOL! No, I’m by no means a celebrity or even B Team porn star. My stuff is kind of amateur and casual. I do think that my social media and scene queen status over the years has gained a strong South African gay male following and from that people know who I am. I’m sure many have gossiped and giggled a little about my OnlyFans though. I do get the occasional gay at the clubs or bars that would tell me they love my content though.”

Finally, what has the reaction been from people who know you like family members?

Kevin: “My chosen family and close friends were not shocked or surprised at all. I have surrounded myself with mature accepting people. I did have one or two friends that just wanted to talk about implications etc, but I think that was more out of a place of love and care. My family doesn’t know, so don’t send this to my mom, please.”

Kevin is not wrong when he points out that society tends to forget that sex workers and porn actors are humans too. Humans with families, friends, talents, jobs, dreams, struggles, and emotions. I suppose for most people this separation makes it easier. They are after all supposed to be a fantasy.

Social media and the accessibility of the internet, however, blur these lines. The next viral piece of erotic content might just feature someone you know – and perhaps this is just what the world needs to destigmatise sex.

Kevin’s journey as an OnlyFans creator illuminates a path of self-discovery and empowerment. His willingness to embrace his authenticity and challenge societal norms demonstrates a profound understanding of his own desires and boundaries. Through his content, Kevin not only celebrates his sexuality but also encourages others to embrace their true selves without fear or shame.
