Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion at the 19th Annual Soweto Pride
Hosted by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women, Soweto Pride is back for its 19th year, promising a day filled with celebration, entertainment, and, most importantly, inclusivity.
This vibrant event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 30 September 2023, at Dorothy Nyembe Park in Dobsonville, running from 09:00 to 18:00. The march is set to start at 10:30.
Soweto Pride will also host a series of events leading up to the big day, including a workshop on accessing the Equality Courts (27 Sept), an interfaith dialogue (28 Sept) and a film screening (29 Sept). See the end of this article for more details on the events.
Fostering Inclusive Communities through Pride
Under the theme “Creating Inclusive Communities through Pride,” Soweto Pride proudly champions diversity and equality. The organisers firmly believe that celebrating our differences is essential for building stronger and more harmonious societies.
This theme highlights their commitment to creating spaces where individuals from all backgrounds, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or identity, can come together to celebrate and express themselves authentically.
A Day Filled with Entertainment and Unity
Soweto Pride promises a day filled with entertainment and unity. Artists like Baba Ganoosh, Ama Why Not, Bizzcuit SA, Cardiac Music, Melo Janey, DJ Tlangz, DJ Tom, Venus, and Laykhaya Squared will grace the event with their performances, ensuring there’s never a dull moment.
What You Can Bring and What to Leave Behind
To make the most of your day at Soweto Pride, feel free to bring along some food, snacks, water, a Hubbly (hookah), camp chairs, and picnic blankets. However, for the safety and comfort of all attendees, the event has some guidelines in place. No alcohol is allowed to be brought into the venue and weapons, bottles, and unruly behavior or violence will not be tolerated.
A bar will be selling beverages in accordance with event safety and compliance guidelines.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
The organisers of Soweto Pride extend an invitation to all community members, organisations, and allies who share their vision of a society where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and empowered. Your presence and support can help pave the way for lasting changes and greater acceptance.
SOWETO Pride: A Political and Social Initiative
SOWETO Pride is more than just a celebration; it’s a political and social initiative with a history dating back to 2004. The Forum for the Empowerment of Women initiated this project to create a vital political and social space for black lesbian women and other members of the LGBTQ+ community. Its primary goal is to increase visibility and amplify the voices of black lesbian women and the broader LGBTQ+ community.
So mark your calendar, gather your friends, and join the 19th Annual Soweto Pride on September 30, 2023, at Dorothy Nyembe Park. Together, we can create a more inclusive, accepting, and harmonious world for everyone.
