Queer Afrikaans rapper Angie oeh faces another cancer battle

A fundraising campaign has been launched to support outspoken queer Afrikaans rapper Angie oeh who requires urgent cancer surgery.
Angie, who describes herself as the only Afrikaans mumble rap artist, disclosed on Monday that she’d been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer at the age of 24.
“I’m scared, so fucking scared,” she wrote in an Instagram post about the shocking diagnosis. She included a photo of herself in a hospital room.
“Every time I have just a little time to think I cry like a pussy. How the hell does something like this happen without you knowing it or feeling it?” Angie asked in disbelief.
She revealed she will be undergoing urgent “life-changing” surgery to remove the tumour in her lungs, followed by six months of chemotherapy.
Campaign to Raise Crucial Funds
Angie, whose career has been put on hold, will need to pay R200,000 for her treatment. She’s now been compelled to ask for donations to help fund the huge medical bill.
“If anyone can help me with something… please help me. I have all the invoices and the banking details of the account we use to pay them,” she appealed.
This is not Angie’s first encounter with cancer. In 2022, she underwent the removal of a cancerous tumour from her back.
Her management has set up a BackaBuddy page to mobilise financial aid, with nearly R90,000 raised in just a day. They said that any surplus funds beyond the initial target will be allocated for ongoing treatment, medical check-ups, and compensation for lost income.
Artistic Achievements and Advocacy
Angie, a proudly gay artist, initially made waves in the Afrikaans music scene with her 2021 viral TikTok track Dis Jou Wyfie (It’s Your Woman). Her musical journey continued with the release of several other singles, including Sex in Afrikaans, and collaborations with artists like Jack Parow.
Last year, Angie strongly criticised singer Steve Hofmeyr for his anti-LGBTIQ+ vitriol on social media. She described him as an entitled and insecure individual perpetuating queerphobia and toxic masculinity.
Although Hofmeyr responded defensively at the time, he was eventually forced to issue an apology for earlier hate speech comments and to pay R100,000 in compensation to an LGBTIQ+ rights organisation.
