New anthology volume celebrates queer activism in Africa
Taboom Media and GALA Queer Archive have launched the latest addition to the Queer Activism in Africa anthology series, Whispers and Shouts.
This third volume is a compelling collection of personal narratives from 21 human rights advocates spanning the African continent.
Celebrating Courageous Voices
In a celebration of courage and resilience, Whispers and Shouts delves into the stories of 21 dedicated human rights defenders who have played significant roles in the fight for LGBTQI+ equality across Africa.
These accounts, thoughtfully compiled in both English and French, offer a poignant glimpse into the struggles and triumphs that define the ongoing queer rights movement on the continent.
A Visual Journey of Empowerment
Each narrative within the anthology is accompanied by striking illustrations crafted by queer and ally artists.
These evocative visuals vividly capture the challenges and victories of the LGBTQI+ movement, breathing life into the intimate stories shared within the pages of Whispers and Shouts.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Building on the success of its predecessors, Hopes and Dreams That Sound Like Yours (May 2021) and Courage to Share (Aug. 2022), Whispers and Shouts emerged from a Media Advocacy for LGBTQI+ Equality workshop organised by Taboom Media in May 2023.
Activists from nearly 20 African countries converged to shape this powerful anthology, affirming the enduring spirit of collaboration and solidarity within the LGBTQI+ community.
Supporting Voices for Change
The realisation of Whispers and Shouts was made possible through the generous support of esteemed partners such as the Arcus Foundation, the National Endowment for Democracy, and Initiative Sankofa d’Afrique de l’Ouest (ISDAO).
The anthology is published under a Creative Commons license, encouraging widespread sharing and engagement with these impactful narratives.
