Congratulations! Somizi ties the knot in spectacular wedding
Somizi Mhlongo, one of Africa’s most high profile gay celebs, has married his husband in a lavish, star-studded wedding in keeping with his always outrageous sense of style.
While Soweto was celebrating Pride on Saturday, the Idols SA judge and his partner of more than two years, Mohale Motaung, tied the knot in a traditional African wedding in nearby Kibler Park, south of Johannesburg.
It was undoubtedly one of the hottest events of the year. The couple were joined by family, including Somizi’s mom, and a host of celebrities to mark their nuptials in a ceremony that combined traditional elements and spectacular luxury.
The couple and their guests posted an explosion of stunning photos of the occasion on social media, under the hashtag #somhaletraditionalwedding.
The men wore at least five different outfits, from leopard skin to high fashion creations by designer Gert-Johan Coetzee that saw the duo looking like luminous African kings.
“I wanted to unify Africa,” Coetzee told the Sowetan about his creations. “It was about celebrating freedom, with one aspect for me being married to a man. It is one of those things in SA that we can be happy and grateful about because we are free to love who we want.”
A massive marquee was decorated in white and gold with giant chandeliers, golden thrones for the newlyweds and a huge multi-tiered tower cake.
“This deco and marquee was just as whimsical as I had imagined it,” gushed Somizi on Instagram. He also appeared to suggest that there is more to come, stating: “Here’s to the next. The white wedding.” It’s hard to imagine how he’ll top this one, though!
And while his Instagram was aflame with attention thanks to the wedding (headlines said the occasion had “broken” the internet), Somizi couldn’t stop himself from punting his upcoming limited edition ‘champagne’ on Sunday. He also went straight back to work on Idols.
He later posted a picture of what looked like the couple’s engagement rings and said: “Dear Lord. May this be our forever.”
Somizi and Mohale got engaged in March 2018, when the media personality popped the question during a romantic trip to the city of love, Paris.
Our congratulation to the two lovebirds!
