Openly gay would-be American presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg has been featured on the cover of Time magazine with his husband.

Buttigieg, who has been mayor of the city of South Bend, Indiana since 2012, is a former Naval Intelligence Officer who served in Afghanistan. He recently launched his presidential campaign and is making a major impact in US politics.

Buttigieg speaks eight languages and is now in third place to secure the democratic party candidacy for America’s presidency; behind Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

In a sign of his growing influence, the politician graces the cover of Time, alongside his husband, Chasten Glezman.

The couple are profiled in an article titled First Family, which describes their everyday domestic life, including who washes the dishes, takes out the rubbish and handles the dogs.

The publication goes on to describe Buttigieg as “the first openly gay person to make a serious bid for the presidency.”

Buttigieg reveals that he came out in 2015 in the midst of his reelection campaign for mayor because he realised that he couldn’t openly date men until his constituents knew the truth. While fearing the worst, he went on to win the poll with 80% of the vote.

Chasten also discloses that when he came out to his conservative family he was forced to leave home and sleep on his friends’ couches. His parents, however, eventually came to accept and embrace him.

If he were to become president, the 37-year-old Buttigieg would not only be the first openly gay American leader but also the youngest.

A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that 68 percent of Americans would be either comfortable with or enthusiastic about a gay or lesbian person running for president. That figure jumps to 75 percent among voters under the age of 35.
