Giving an oh-so-stylish finger to gender conventions, Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness took to the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards red carpet wearing a sheer black dress.

Van Ness, who handles all matters related to grooming on the popular makeover reality show, arrived at the event in the stunning outfit, complete with high heel ankle boots, and a clutch purse.

He was accompanied by boyfriend Wilco Froneman, who donned a more traditional suit. The confident and loved up couple held hands and wowed the crowds and, of course, social media (aside from the usual queer-phobic trolls).

Openly gay American Olympian Gus Kenworthy commented, “Hot new couple alert!” while another fan added, “You ARE stunning. Inside and out… thank you for living your truth in such an authentic way.”

Writing alongside one of the red carpet pictures that he posted on Instagram, Van Ness said: “We absolutely came to slay this lewk [special outfit] & fuck a gender norm.”

One hater, however, wrote that, “The guy in the dress looks like the villain in despicable me 3”. Van Ness hit back: “I look f**king stunning and my name is Jonathan, snap chat filter using on your Insta tiny circle private profile having self.”

He commented further: “Also, I love all these transphobic comments in here. ‘The guy in a dress’ is insulting and anyone that doesn’t see the implications is blind…”

The night was ultimately a triumphant one for the entire Queer Eye team. The show took home awards for Outstanding Structured Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured or Competition Reality Program and Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program.

Van Ness stars in the Netflix series alongside co-hosts Antoni Porowski (food & wine), Bobby Berk (interior design) Karamo Brown (culture), and Tan France (fashion).

Queer Eye, which debuted in February, is a reboot of the landmark 2003 – 2007 show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. It follows a new set of five gay hosts who give participants a lifestyle makeover, including wardrobe, décor, cooking and other advice.
