Simon & I screening at Industry

Joburg queer social space Industry recently hosted a screening of activist and filmmaker Bev Ditsie’s documentary Simon & I; about her life and that of LGBTI struggle icon Simon Nkoli.

Around 150 people attended the event in Maboneng, which not only marked World Aids Day but also celebrated the 15th anniversary of the original release of the groundbreaking film.

A discussion with Ditsie and her mother was held after the screening, which tackled topics such as: the challenges faced by the community, more specifically by black lesbians; the lack of community and insensitivity by wealthy members of the community; the need for safe spaces; and the improvement in media coverage of LGBTQI issues.
