Mamelodi to mark LGBTI Pride ahead of World Aids Day
The Tshwane township of Mamelodi will be hosting another Mams Pride event on Saturday, 26 November to celebrate and empower the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community and to salute their allies who continue to support the LGBTI in various ways.
First held in 2014, Mams Pride has become an important platform to highlight and promote tolerance and diversity as well as a popular safe space for Mamelodi’s LGBTI community to meet and socialise
This year’s event will for the first time be held at the Hinterland Ave Park in Mamelodi East. The festivities start at 12pm and entry is R30 per person at the gate (and R50 extra if you come with a stocked coolerbox).
Held just before World Aids Day (1 December), Mams Pride will mark this key date and will provide free mobile HIV counselling and testing, courtesy of OUT LGBT Well-being’s Ten81 Centre.
There will be LGBTI information and goodies stalls as well as food and bars for participants to eat and quench their thirst.
Attendees will be treated to an entertainment line-up, such as the “Pink Chain” DJs (Tinaz, Olwee, LesG and Sojamore). There will also be live performers, including Amstel, Katz and Charles Chacha Glory
Organisers Jay Matlou and Martina Molebale urged LGBTI people, their friends, families and allies in the area, and beyond, to come out for an afternoon of fun, socialising and community building.
“This is a safe space where we can all truly be ourselves without stigma. It’s also an opportunity to increase the visibility of the LGBTI community, build awareness around hate crimes and mobilise LGBTI people to be empowered and healthy,” Matlou said.

Mams Pride was there from the appointed time of 12h00. It was well set up and it was organized, nice toilets, good sound and wonderful music. All of the NGO’s that were supposed to be there for the testing and support were there. What was missing were the crowds, they only appeared after 18h30, what a pity !! One hopes that in time to come this event will be better supported from the out set, its neccessary that we support our events. Well done to the OUT team.
