Suné Botha on her album cover

Afrikaans gospel singer Suné Botha has outraged members of the LGBT community with her homophobic comments calling on God to punish gay people.

In a May 24 post on her Facebook page, Botha wrote that she was shocked to hear that Ireland had recently voted to legalise same-sex marriage.

“How sick,” she said. “And how contrary to God’s will. Like in the days of Lot, I personally believe that if God does not punish them he will one day explain to Sodom why he destroyed the cities. The King is Coming!”

She went on to comment that legalising gay marriage is “sicker than sick.”

Botha asked, “Can you imagine how they are breaking God’s heart?” She also said that same-sex marriage is “the devil’s way of rebelling against God,” and compared gay people to “murderers, thieves, rapists and drunks.”

The disturbing statements led to a flurry of comments for and against her views, with a number of Facebook users posting pro-gay memes and slamming the bigoted singer.

Botha has released at least one gospel album, titled U Alleen is God (You Alone are God), in 2013.

According to her website, Botha hopes that the album will inspire people and give them hope in the knowledge that God is in control and that he will help them with problems like divorce, sickness or death.”

afrikaans_gospel_singer_slams_gay_marriage_facebookFreelance writer and columnist Thorne Godinho has now laid a complaint against Botha with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

“Although I support the right of people to engage in free speech, I stand against people who utilise those rights to promote hatred and discrimination,” Godinho told Mambaonline.

“Suné Botha suggested that homosexuality was sick – a sickness perhaps – and I find that deplorable. Young LGBTI people are often forced to live in homes and communities where this unscientific opinion about queer identity is pervasive. Suné’s comment reaffirms this unintelligent view and that’s why I approached the SAHRC,” he said.

Mambaonline has attempted to contact Botha and her management but has thus far been unsuccessful.
