A 13-year-old Kansas boy has reportedly been suspended by his school for carrying a purse to class.

Skyler Davis, a student at the Anderson County Senior-Junior School, told KCTV5 News that after he refused to take off the colourful designer bag slung over his shoulder, he was sent home by the assistant principal.

Davis, who used the purse for some time without incident, insisted that his female classmates were not asked to remove their purses and that he was only targeted because he is a boy.

“I don’t think everyone should be treated differently. Everyone should have the same privileges,” said Davis. “It expresses myself and I think everyone else can wear it, so I wear it as well.”

School officials have denied any claims of discrimination and say that no one – male or female – is allowed to take purses or any kind of bag into classrooms and that these must be left in lockers.

Davis’ furious mother, Leslie Willis, argues that this rule is not in the school’s student handbook and should be included there to avoid confusion.

For now she is backing her son’s refusal to give up the purse.

“He’s just a child. And if this isn’t bullying, I don’t know what is,” she said. “I think it is pretty cool that Skyler is making a stand and it’s causing somebody to listen”.
