Lance Weyer, Mr. Gay South Africa, has laid a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) over a billboard promoting a spiritual gay ‘cure’.

The Pretoria billboard for the Light of the Nations church equates homosexuality with a number of social ills, such as depression and drug and alcohol abuse, and claims that these can be ‘cured’ through the Christian faith.

Two members of the public, Francois Joubert and his husband Werner Nieuwoudt, first brought attention to the advert by laying a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority.

In his complaint to the SAHRC, Weyer, who is also a DA councillor in the Buffalo City municipality, says that the billboard is “offensive, dishonest and misleading”.

He cites the Constitution’s Bill of Rights which prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and also refers to the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, which bars publishing words that have the intention to “be hurtful, be harmful or to incite harm, [or] promote or propagate hatred” when it comes to areas including sexual orientation.

“One of the main reasons we have so much violence against LGBTI people in South Africa is that community leaders and churches spread hate in ways like this, and when this happens the SAHRC should step in,” Weyer told Mambaonline.

“People cannot be allowed to trample all over the Bill of Rights,” he added.
