ANGER AS MUGABE NAMED UN ‘LEADER FOR TOURISM’
Homophobic 88-year-old despot Robert Mugabe’s appointment as a ‘leader for tourism’ by the UN’s World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has been met with outrage.
According to media reports, the Zimbabwean president was given the informal honour along with an agreement for Zambia and Zimbabwe to co-host the annual UNWTO general assembly next year.
Mugabe’s policies have led to Zimbabwe’s economic collapse and are unlikely to have aided in boosting tourism to the region.
Speaking to Gay Star News, British LGBT rights activist Peter Tatchell – who twice tried to make a citizen’s arrest of Mugabe for his human rights abuses – described the appointment as “outrageous”.
“The very idea that Mugabe should be hired to be leader of anything is a joke,” he said.
“He’s ruined Zimbabwe and decimated its tourism industry. He is in no position to lead anyone on tourism policies. It’s truly appalling that the UN is prepared to ignore his grotesque human rights abuses.”
Kumbi Muchemwa, spokesman for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), expressed his disgust at the news, reported African Business Review.
“The man has blood on his hands. Do they want tourists to see those bloody hands?” he asked.
“Robert Mugabe is under international sanctions, so how do you have an international tourism ambassador who can’t travel to other countries?” added Muchemwa.
Mugabe is proudly anti-gay and has previously described gays and lesbians as being “worse than pigs and dogs”.
He has stated that he will never allow gay and lesbian rights to be protected in the country’s new constitution and recently claimed that homosexuality would lead to human extinction.
