HERE’S GAGA’S ‘BORN THIS WAY’ VIDEO
The spectacular video for Lady Gaga’s number one hit Born this Way premiered online on Monday.
Directed by fashion photographer Nick Knight and Gaga herself and choreographed by Laurieann Gibson, the elaborate seven minute clip begins with a pink triangle, a symbol of the oppression of gay people by the Nazis.
Gaga then gives birth to a fictional race of people that is free of prejudice.
“This is the manifesto of Mother Monster,” she says, before moving into dance sequences with a group of dancers.
The song recently debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard chart, making it the 1,000th No. 1 song in the chart’s 52-year history.
View the video below and tell us what you think about it. Is Gaga taking herself too seriously, or is the video a work of genius?
I love LG but this is just Madonna’s Express Yourself and Vogue rolled into one. Madonna better get a new album out soon, LG is starting to bore me now.
Overly pompous…. It’s just too much – she’s trying too hard with that long-winded intro. She needs to learn some subtlety and wit. It doesn’t help that unlike Madonna, Gaga doesn’t ever seem to have any expressions. Her face is always immobile and cold. Madge has heart and warmth.
TOO MUCH!!. Rolando I totally agree with you. Never in my life have I witnessed one being try so hard to get attention. I do love Ga Ga’s music and do think she is the best thing to happen to pop music, but Like Christina Aguilera who has no idea how to practice restraint when she hits those high notes, so does Ga Ga just have no idea where to draw the line. We have become so desensitised to her Craziness that she seems to have done it all in her 1st 3 years of her career. Where to from here?
I describe her as Madonna’s trashy younger Italian step sister. She will never have the poise that Madge has, nor the finesse and class. She is the ultimate copycat, and does it with no conscience, but gets away with it. Madonna is going into the studio soon and hopefully a new studio album by the Spring. We can’t wait and once again she break records. GO GIRL!!
Stick to just dancing and poker facing…. Being different and unique is a wonderful thing. But some people reach a point where they try too hard to be different and lose themselves along the way. And that is what’s happening here.
Lady Gaga created a “gay anthem” with ‘Born This Way’. Sure, it sounds an awful lot like Madonna but Lady Gaga has admitted that Madonna is one of the artists who inspires her. Fair enough…
BUT in trying to spread the message of acceptance with this song, she creates a video where she tries to look like the biggest freak. Is that really helping anybody’s cause? Think about it, she’s trying to get people to embrace people who aren’t in the majority but she looks like she’s from outer space.
Well, Lady Gaga, if you were hoping to spread the message of equality for people (or martians) with skeletal appearances – then *maybe* you’ve done your job.
But I fail to see how this is helping the gay community in any way. Too bad that some people are so obsessed with her, that they overlook these things.
Food for thought. Art is always viewed differently, getting into a debate of what art actually is will be another matter. I don’t think this is any more over the top than say bad romance or alejandro.
She has always stated that she is a pioneer for pop and fusing art with her music. Its a form of self expression. What may be ‘offensive’ to one group could be viewed completely differently to another.
I think the intro is a good setting of context for a rather repititive song. The song IS about birth and redefinition of what ‘the self’ actually is. It requires the deconstructive elements visually to demonstrate this. Its not meant to be a depiction of ‘freakishness’ or difference but a similarity, we all have a common need for love with the ability to do great evil. I do not think she tries to ‘shock’ but rather tries to fit a message more artistically than she has done before.
As for Madonna, i have never relly understood her fame. She lacks any form of depth vocally and borders on the side of monotonus auto tuned shrieking.
Despite views of her ‘shocking’ tactics i applaud her for at least getting the conversation started on issues of gender and sexuality.
