An estimated 10,000 people turned out for the 19th annual Joburg Pride Parade – the largest gay event in Africa. Mambaonline was there to capture it all right from the start.

I agree. I agree, it was fantastic, the weather, the entertainment, the people, everything was just fabulous. Hopefully we will double the amount of people who attended this year, and there was allot of people!
a Few things really stood out for me…
1) The amount of people that came from the townships, all dressed up, maybe not as expensive as the other outfits, but with just as much pride!
2) There was allot of paralyzed people, old people and children, all equipped with a gay flag, and was welcomed with a big smile!
So a big congrats to the organizers, entertainers, and most of all every LGBT person who was there!

Pride. It was fantastic.
Well Done. This was definitely the absolute best pride ever. Finally we have proper organisers. Well done to every person involved in making the 19th Pride stand out and be so successful. You could see great organisation everywhere. We really really enjoyed it.
I have only a few suggestions/criticisms. Firstly, why was there not more press/photographers? We really should try to attract the media as well, best awareness there could be.
Secondly, the DJ”s were great but the entertainers were not that good. Hopefully if we can get better sponsors and better funding next time, we can attract a few better known celebrities that can show their support. We have great great artists (just look at 94.7”s joburg day) Perhaps we can get some of them as well. 5FM as usual made the day fantastic.
The food and drinks were really very reasonable – thanx, were just a bit surprised that the Play energy drinks were R20 each! You pay only R10 in the store, plus they were one of the major sponsors, what went wrong there?
But all in all it was fantastic, and I know it can only become even better from here. Keep it up, and in a few years we might be competing with San Francisco Pride or Sydney Mardi Gras…
Still too White. Why is PRIDE still so white? Why are ALL our black GAY and LESBIAN brothers and sisters not joining? Why is there is seprate SOWETO PRIDE held? Surely we as GAY people should understand the essence of inclusivesness.

Inclusive. I don”t think Pride excluded anyone. In fact, they even invited straight families and friends. Pride was white, because more white people arrived, and that is the only reason. Of course our black brothers and sisters were just as welcome. Soweto Pride is held because there are lots of people there that cannot afford to go elsewhere, and also to highlight the need there too – read the articles on this site about Soweto Pride. Please, why must we make every single thing in this country a black against white thing…
I totaly agree-All Inclusive. There i was sitting and thinking this is the most positive forum i have ever read on this site or about “The Joburg Pride” in general. That has been too good to be true.
Im a black man and i find these whole excuses of not attending Pride and talking about white this, black that, irritating and uncalled for. I see deferences in skin colour and in people but thats not going to stop me from doing what i want or making a stand on who i am, what i am and what i believe in.
If one wants to sit at home, please do so. It doesnt cost any millions for a person to travel from Soweto to Rosebank. Whities dont owe anyone anything anymore, its far too long to blame other people.
If Soweto does its own thing, then Pretoria must as well have its own. Pretorians all come in numbers and have all the fun in joburg, they dont seperate themselves from other Gautengans, why must a Sowetan do that. People we wont forget the past but it is time we moved on. If it is white thing, then there wont be black organisations or helpers to make Pride a success.

Best Pride ever. I also agree that this years event was the best and that every thing was well done and Preped – Bruce/Tanje Jenni – job well done and from here on this will be known as a big highlight of gay events.Now next year can we please have a shower at the event s we can cool down if the sun is this HOT again i thought i was going to die – lol – To every gay straight and bi person that has attended this event see you next year for a BIGGER BETTER & SEXIER Pride again.I”ll be there in a nother exiting outfit…

what i hate. i have been going to the gay pride for almost 5 years now , what i have noticed is everything its done by whites and coloured black people are excluded.If it was by me I will maybe suggest we black people not to go there again.Its pathetic, the gaymagazines are all of WHITES, I dont think that there’s a page cover that has a black person outside.This is rediculous even when i asked my friends to go they refused they will tell me that they dont want to watch white people all the time
This thing has to come to an end, they need to give black people a chance to also participate on achieving what they do best on stage and on their minds,But they only time that they need black people to be in front its when they want a support to fight for their right in court, even on these Gay and lesbian Organisation they dont send whites to request for something there is only BLACK in front

YAAAAAAWN!!!!. Get over yourself yeyam! The co-chair of Joburg pride is black. There were black artists performing at pride and if you take the time to actually go through all the galleries on this and other sites then you might notice that the darker people on the photo’s are actually black people and not white gay boys with tans!
This year’s pride had more black people attending than ever before and that was FAB! You should stay at home and NEVER attend pride because there is no place for people with your attitude, ignorance and level of stupidity there! What you are looking for, I am sure you will find at your local shebeen – enjoy it!

More black people!. For people that say the Pride is too white… who’s fault is that? If you don’t turn up, you should not complain because there are far more black people than white people in South Africa, nobody is holding you back to come and join in.
. So get off your black ass and join the volunteers that organise the thing and stop complaining. NO ONE excluded blacks/colourds. You just didn’t pitch when the OPEN FORUM was there to make the decisions. Why does PRIDE have to be BLACK or WHITE? Why must we listen to black music. The music played was universal not white. Stop being the poor black victim. And if you don’t want to see whities as well then PLEASE STAY AWAY.

More black people. May be more black people must come out of the closet first and then deal with the whole media and other issues later.Cultural taboos do play a role not skin colour (mind you there is a difference). If not the case then people of colour that wanna increase the number that takes part in such, feel free to do so, A “dom pass” is not necessary anymore.
By the way, what does democracy mean? Looks like the meaning still hasnt sunk in after becoming a household term for so many years now. No one is holding anyone back. People must get off that beautiful curvescious “not white” ass and make a change. If one has tried to do something or volunteered and turned down coz of his skin colour then you got something to make so much noise about, not just watching and hissing a mile away and doing nothing. Its just my thought coz i dont like playing victim.

y arent there no black people on these pics. in all honesty as a blck person who was present at rose bank etc, i feel ofended coz there arent black people to show accept a very small number not more than 5 that i have across these two galaries of the march…..guys cum on now, we will start thinking and feeling that joburg pride is for whites and asians period. perhaps the soweto pride was made for us (blacks) maybe, but i totaly reckon that soweto and joburg are two different locations and it wasnt at all specified for black people…so next year my fellow peeps that i love so much, lets become more versatile and include more pictures of present black beautiful people of our society…love ya’ll….lala
so here is an idea….. …first of all, GET A LIFE! secondly, get a freaking camera and start taking pics of whoever you would like to see. GET OVER THIS FUCKING COLOUR THING! people like you just sit and moan and bitch but where is the pics that you and all your black brothers took?
You can upload as many black people’s pictures as you want on the Joburgpride Facebook group. Why didn’t you organise a photographer to make sure that black people are represented in all photo’s? Why dont you become more “versatile” and start something that will actually make a difference in this country of ours as apposed to just moan and bitch and be the poor black victim. Why aren’t you nagging to be on the pride board? why aren’t you demanding to be a mamba photographer?
Lastly – don’t make comments like this on behalf of “us (blacks)” – this is your own insecurity and issue so deal with it and stop hiding behind colour. YOU ARE INSULTING BLACK PEOPLE by making STUPID remarks like this.
Next year my fellow peep I challenge you to drop the victim act and start including yourself in this beautiful society. Till then rather shut up!
Simplifying a complex issue. Unforutnately…regardless of the “suck-it-up” and “stand up and be counted messages”, we are still a divided country shame…and this is more subtle than we would like to admit- our mindset determines what we look at and what we reflect- and what is reflected here is still the thinking of the people in this country. Sometimes saying blackpeople don’t look represeted in this pictures is not a complaint, but a reflection that makes concious what the “official” photographers biases are… i mean interesting the difference between the simply blue gallery vs the therapy/legends gallery…need i say more? The truth is- it’s not a simple issue of stading up and being counted, it’s a mindset thing…and it will take a while and violent responses like those here won’t help advance the cause! My piece!
