Start Your Engines! Drag Race South Africa is Coming!
Get ready to sashay and slay! The hugely popular drag reality phenomenon Drag Race is officially set to speed into Africa with Drag Race South Africa.
World of Wonder (WOW), the production powerhouse behind the hit series, dropped the news at the prestigious MIPCOM event in Cannes on Monday. Africa’s queens are finally getting their chance to shine in the first-ever edition of the show on the continent.
The announcement promised “a brand-new cast of queens sashaying onto the mainstage, bringing their unique style, talent, and culture to the world.”
WOW teased the exciting news on X (formerly Twitter), posting: “Start your engines, South Africa.” They confirmed, “Drag Race South Africa has officially been greenlit,” with casting set to kick off in 2025. “Stay tuned, racers!” they added.
Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the co-founders of WOW, expressed their excitement: “We have seen a host of gorgeous, talented queens hailing from across Africa grace the runway over the years, so now it’s time for a unique version from South Africa that includes the incredible talent the continent has to offer.”
They continued, “It’s no secret that our mission is to see Drag Race in every continent and country across the world, so this is a huge step in making that a reality.”
South Africa has a rich drag culture, with local streamer Showmax recently debuting its own local drag reality show Beaulah: Queens van die Kaap.
Drag Race South Africa will be streamed on WOW’s own platform, WOW Presents Plus (WOWPP), joining other international editions like Drag Race Mexico and Drag Race Thailand.
Since its debut in 2009, hosted by the legendary RuPaul, Drag Race has transformed the global drag scene. The original US version has won 29 Emmy Awards, produced 16 seasons, and birthed countless spin-offs and international versions.
And let’s not forget the iconic fact that the very first winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race was BeBe Zahara Benet, born in Cameroon—a true African queen who started it all!
Now, South Africa’s queens are poised to make their mark, and we can’t wait to see the charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent they’ll bring to the runway.
