In Pictures: Durban Pride 2024
Durban, South Africa, joined a host of other cities around the world in celebrating Pride on the last weekend of International Pride Month 2024.
The annual Durban Pride event saw activists, community members, and allies making a visible and colourful demand for equality, inclusion, and freedom from hate and discrimination.
Around 1,000 participants marched from the Amphitheatre on North Beach along the Snell Parade and the promenade under the theme “Singabantu Nathi” (Human Too).
“Pride events like this not only offer a space for LGBTIQ+ individuals to express their true selves but also educate and inspire allies to join the fight for equality,” said LGBTIQ group Uthingo Network.
The Weekend Witness came under fire for publishing a front page photo of the march directly under a prominent headline that read “PMB’s stinking sewage crisis,” which seemed to be related to the photo.
The newspaper soon after issued an apology for the “unfortunate juxtaposition,” adding that its editorial mandate “has always been respectful of the LGBTQIA+ community and committed to advocating equal rights for all.”
