The original Simply Blue nightclub in the Heartlands.

Johannesburg’s only regular weekend nightclub focusing on gay people of colour has closed its doors until further notice.

Simply Blue nightclub owner Jerome Camp told Mambaonline that the venue, at Braamfontein’s Orchidea Hotel, had been closed for over a week due to emergency maintenance by the city in the area.

He was unable to confirm when Simply Blue nightclub would re-open, but said that he would take the opportunity to reassess the future of the club. He explained that the hotel’s bar however remains open six days a week.

“We want to look at if there is still a need for a gay club such as Simply Blue in Johannesburg.” He added that the venue had of late also been plagued by police raids relating to changes to the city’s bylaws on liquor licenses.

He urged interested parties to contact him on clubsimplyblue@yahoo.com with “any thoughts or suggestions that will assist us in the decision as to the direction we will follow”.

Simply Blue first opened in 2003 in the Heartlands area of Braamfontein and three years later moved to the Orchidea Hotel. It broke new ground as one of the first black-owned gay clubs in the city.
