TUTU CALLS FOR UNITY ON GAY BISHOP
Openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson has been heckled during a sermon in London, while Archbishop Desmond Tutu has called for Anglican tolerance for gay clergy.
The controversial Robinson was speaking at a West London church about the growing tension within the Anglican Church over the issue of gay clergy when a man started to shout out “heretic” and “repent,” and blaming him for the schism.
The bishop, who has been excluded from an upcoming international Anglican conference because of his homosexuality, was forced to stop his sermon while a hymn was sung and the man escorted out the church.
“This discussion of homosexuality we are having in the Church is not so significant because of what it says about homosexuality, but of what it says about God,” Robinson said when he continued the sermon.
Meanwhile, speaking on Sky News on Sunday, Archbishop Desmond Tutu again called for tolerance and for the church to unite on the issue.
“The Anglican Church prides itself – and this is one of its greatest attributes – on being the church that is comprehensive, meaning that it includes all kinds of points of view. One of the sadnesses about the present crisis is that we seem to be jettisoning this wonderful inclusivity that is a characteristic of our church,” he said.
