Please note that the SAPS (South African Police Service) does not support the practice of cruising because it is dangerous. However, since the SAPS realises that it will continue, they recommend the following safer cruising rules:

  • If you are going to cruise, go to a club or bath house. If you are cruising in parks try to stay in well-lit areas.
  • Avoid wooded areas - if you can't even see the attackers you won't be able to find cute boys either, so do it in the light, boys.
  • Always pay the rent boys.
  • As far as possible, let someone you know where you are going when you are going out cruising (we're not kidding!).
  • Choose a spot with a ready escape route.
  • Regard all strangers with a healthy degree of suspicion.
  • If you have suffered an attack, don't hesitate to call the police (confidentiality is guaranteed).
  • Always practice safer sex - use a condom! Safer cruising should always include safer sex.
  • If you have been bashed in the past and did not report it, please contact Inspector Van der Merwe on +27 (0) 82 374 1299.
